Yorkshire Schools Support Programme, designed at the height of the pandemic, has been a huge success across Yorkshire! From June 2020, Community Cricket Officers from Yorkshire Cricket Board have delivered high quality, safe PE to over 70 schools and delivered over 1020 hours!

Continuing into 2021 – the programme has flourished and has played a crucial role in accessing more schools across the county from September to December. Showing that cricket and sport, no matter what time of year, can be accessible for everyone!

St Bedes Primary School in Sheffield had this to say about the programme and Rehan Mir, Community Cricket Officer for Sheffield:

“Rehan has taught my Year 6 class cricket for 7 weeks. He engages the pupils very well; being friendly, but also able to ensure all pupils remain focused on the tasks. The lessons he has taught follow a sensible sequence that gradually build up skills week on week. By taking part in the sessions, I have been able to develop my skills as well, and would be better equipped to teach cricket in the future, which is very valuable.”

A new addition to the programme for 2021 is the ‘Primary Cricket Leaders’ course. With the help of Yorkshire Cricket’s Coach Development team, this 2-hour course was introduced to the 12-hour offer for schools to utilise - marking the importance of transferable skills and taking a holistic approach to learning to encourage additional activity at lunch time and after school clubs, led by the new Primary Cricket Leaders.

Gareth Davis, Primary Schools Lead for Yorkshire, said:

“The YSSP has enabled the YCB and cricket to support schools all year round, ensuring cricket is on the agenda for teachers and children; all saying “cricket is a game for me”. The programme empowers the school and children to select what is best for them, with a focus on play and leadership. The YCB aim is to be in as many schools as possible across Yorkshire to provide every child the chance to take part in cricket. This is a very exciting time and provides Yorkshire Cricket and its partners the chance to provide cricket for all.”
