Match Report
On Tuesday 15th August Yorkshire U13A played Warwickshire U13 at Blackley CC in the ESCA Northern Counties Championship. This was the U13As final game in the “round robin” section of the competition and victory in this game would guarantee reaching the Final.
Historically, Warwickshire have always provided strong opposition so a good game was in prospect. Warwickshire won the toss and elected to bat at a sunny and picturesque Blackley CC. They set off steadily but lost their first wicket to Joe Norbury’s bowling in the 6th over leaving them at 14-1. Spin twins, Clarke Doughney and Jack Young, came on when the opening bowlers finished their spell. They both bowled superbly and complimented each other with Clarke ending the game with figures of 9-3-13-0 and Jack (pictured)with figures of 9-3-18-4. At the end of their spell, Warwickshire had been reduced to 65-5 including the wicket of the dangerous opener Sachin Dubb who has already scored over 600 runs this season for Warwickshire U13s. Ben Walsh (0-15) and Matthew Weston (1-7) then continue the spin assault and, with the help of 2 excellent run-outs from Yash Vagadia and Harry Watkinson, Warwickshire progressed cautiously to 94-8. The return to pace bowling so Harry Watkinson handed the ball. He proceeded to take the 2 remaining wickets with his first 2 balls giving him match figures of 0.2-0-0-2 and on a hat-trick for his next game! Warwickshire’s final score was 94 all out.
Captain Matthew Weston and Yash Vagadia opened the batting and never looked in any trouble taking the score to 95-0 to win the game by 10 wickets in the 22nd over with Matthew on 49* and Yash on 43*.
Thanks go to Blackley CC for their hospitality both on and off the field. The magnificent presentation of their ground was complimented on by both teams and sets of supporters.
This was Yorkshire U13As fifth win from six games in the ESCA Northern Counties Championship, losing only to Lancashire by 8 runs in a very close game. The top 2 sides from the qualifying stage meet in the Final which will be held at Woodhouse Grange CC on Sunday 27th August commencing at 11.30am. The Final will be between Yorkshire and Lancashire which will give the Yorkshire boys the opportunity to gain revenge for the earlier defeat. This promises to be a very interesting and close Roses encounter and the team would appreciate the encouragement of anyone who is able to come along and support them.
