Match report.
Warwickshire U14 228-9 (Isaac Coates 3-17) beat Yorkshire U14A 126 all out (Lachlan Doidge 30) by 102 runs.
A bleak rainy morning greeted the U14A squad on their arrival at Rugby CC to take on Warwickshire in a 50 over friendly. With the rain quickly clearing up and the covers off, revealing a unique looking pitch, skipper Isaac Coates won the toss and elected to bowl first. Some firey opening bowling from Diffey and Smith made the most of some steep bounce off a length, unsettling the Warwickshire openers. But they showed great discipline in seeing it out and capitalising when the bowlers over pitched. Yorkshire needed a run out to break the opening partnership of 75 before Bradford (10-1-39-0), Doidge (6-1-26-0) and the exceptional Coates (6-2-17-3) pegged the run rate back and built pressure. This brought about wickets before Smith (9-0-50-2), Diffey (10-1-40-1) and Crowther (9-1-46-1) returned at the end to restrict Warwickshire to 228-9 off the allotted 50 overs - which looked about 50 runs over par.
Openers Doidge (30) and Spenceley (8) got the innings off to a patient start in the face of some excellent Warwickshire swing bowling, before Mountford removed both openers and the spin of Shrikanthan catered for Jahangir (1) and Cree (0). Chapman (10) and Nicholson (22) set about rebuilding the innings but the ever increasing rate saw scoreboard pressure begin to take its toll; with Nicholson caught trying to hit over the top and Chapman caught at gully. Some late flurries from Diffey (15) and Crowther (14) gave Yorkshire a glimmer of hope but eventually it was a step too far, with Yorkshire bowled out for 126 in 39.1 overs, coming a clear second in the fixture.
