Match report.
Yorkshire U15 vs Warwickshire U15, held at Doncaster Town CC (2 day game).
Warwickshire 219 all out (Yash Vagadia 4-14) and 219-8 dec drew with Yorkshire 272-8 dec (Hector Bowerman 80, Dan Ford 53, Leo Johnson 36, Louis Beckett 35*) and 97-5 (Yash Vagadia 40*, Hector Bowerman 37).
Yorkshire took on Warwickshire at Doncaster in their first red ball game of the season. Yorkshire lost the toss and were fielding first. Warwickshire’s batters took advantage of some wayward bowling after a decent opening spell from Bird and Cliff and Yorkshire found themselves needing wickets. They got two just before lunch, which switched the momentum back to the hosts. After lunch, they maintained the pressure and wickets fell to Yash Vagadia (4-14), Gavin Whipp (1-22) and Louis Beckett (2-74) as Warwickshire were all out for 219.
Yorkshire made a decent start, after the early loss of Romir Singh, as Bowerman and Ford took the score to 100 before Ford skied one to cover for an aggressive 54 from 46 balls. Cooper Smith joined Bowerman and they took Yorkshire to 149-2 at stumps. Cooper retired overnight and Leo Johnson joined Bowerman. The two forged an excellent partnership with plenty of aggressive running and good placement before Johnson was strangled down the leg side and Bowerman was out for a patient 80. When Yorkshire stepped the rate up, they lost wickets and it was left to Louis Beckett (35*) to take them to a 53 run lead as they declared, eight down.
Warwickshire were reduced to 47-4 in their second innings by a fine opening burst by Nathan Kenworthy which gave them an outside chance of a win. Thereafter the other bowlers couldn’t quite maintain the pressure. With lengths drifting too short, Warwickshire had moved on to 141 when part timer Ben Collinson made the breakthrough. Bowerman, another part timer, made another, but Warwickshire edged to a declaration two overs after tea. This left Yorkshire a target of 166 in 26 overs.
This was never going to be easy as there are no fielding restrictions in red ball cricket but Yorkshire achieved an honourable draw, with Bowerman scoring 37 and Vagadia 40*.
This was a useful experience for the boys in a different format which gave opportunities to the development players as well.
